A Common Cause of Brooklyn Car Crashes

While every car accident is dangerous, and while they can have any number of causes, one of the most common and most serious causes is excess speed, which a recent fiery crash in Brooklyn highlights only too well. If you’ve been injured by a motorist’s negligence (whether you are his or her passenger or in another vehicle), don’t wait to consult with an experienced Brooklyn car crash attorney.

The Deadly Crash

The deadly crash in question happened in the wee hours of a Saturday morning in July (as reported by Eyewitness News), and it left the driver of the Maserati fatally wounded and his 35-year-old passenger critically injured. The vehicle jumped a center median near the intersection of Atlantic and Rochester Avenues and slammed into a pole before bursting into flames.

An eyewitness, who was able to pull the injured passenger out of the burning vehicle, shared the following sad comments about the incident, “one car is crushed, so, sort of on fire, you know. So I called 911 and then I came quickly and I saw one guy inside, he was crying. So when I saw he was crying I took this guy.” Accident investigators confirm that speed likely played a pivotal role in the deadly accident.

Speed Kills

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the old adage that speed kills is not about to lose its credibility anytime soon. Consider the following sobering statistics:

  • Excess speed killed 9,478 people on our roads in 2019 alone.
  • For more than the last 20 years, excess speed has played a causative role in about a third of all traffic fatalities.
  • In 2019, excess speed contributed to 26 percent of all fatalities on our roadways.

Driving too Fast for Conditions

Speed limits are set for ideal driving conditions, which means that just because you are keeping your speed below the limit does not necessarily mean that you are not speeding excessively. All of the following factors require drivers to slow down in response to their dangerous effects:

  • Ice, wind, rain, snow, and bad weather generally
  • Accidents on the road
  • Poorly maintained roads
  • Poor visibility caused by hanging branches, fog, bright sun, or anything else
  • Debris on the road
  • Road construction
  • Animals on the road

The Dangerous Effects of Speeding

Driving too fast is dangerous on many levels, including:

  • It makes accidents more likely, and it increases the likelihood that the accidents will be deadly
  • It makes losing control of one’s vehicle more likely (see the deadly accident above)
  • It increases the amount of time and distance on the road that motorists have to respond to danger ahead
