Con Edison Negligence

Natural gas, which is used in providing heat and hot water, can be very dangerous, especially if the gas delivery system is not adequately maintained or kept in good repair. This danger has become all too apparent in recent years and most recently, two buildings in East Harlem were destroyed, and natural gas is the suspected cause of the explosion that destroyed the two buildings. The survivors might need legal assistance from an NYC accident lawyer.

Natural Gas Explosion In New York City

Investigators have suspected that the blast, which killed eight people, wounded fifty and flattened two five story buildings at 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue, was caused by a natural gas leak. Investigators reached that conclusion because the ground on which the two East Harlem buildings once stood was saturated with natural gas, in some cases at a 20% concentration, which suggests that the 125 year old natural gas line, which supplied the two buildings, was leaking.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the soil 18 to 24 inches down into the ground in New York City should have zero concentration of natural gas. The high concentration of natural gas found in the soil supports the hypothesis that the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak. A Con Edison spokesperson stated that the cast iron pipe that was suspected of leaking gas was last repaired in 2004. Con Edison also stated that they had received multiple reports from residents who had been smelling gas for weeks, but Con Edison had recently checked the gas line and did not find any leaks.
