Tractor-Trailers Are a Risk in NYC

November 30, 2021
Tractor trailer

The tractor-tailors that we share our roads with are immensely heavy and massive in size, so they require considerable skill and care to drive safely. When all the necessary safety precautions are not taken into careful consideration, the risk of life-threatening semi accidents happening increases considerably, and the immense danger these accidents pose in New York City doesn’t show signs of abating anytime soon. If you or someone you love has been injured in a tractor-trailer accident, don’t delay consulting with an experienced NYC truck accident attorney.

Three Prime Examples

In order to better understand the immense danger posed by truck accidents in NYC, you needn’t look any further than three prime examples that occurred between September of 2020 and April of 2021.

Fiery Truck Accident

Two off-duty EMT workers were killed in an early morning truck accident in Rockland County. The two young men were traveling southbound on the New York State Thruway when the accident happened. Witnesses say the SUV’s driver appeared to be changing lanes (potentially to exit the thruway) when his vehicle collided with the tractor-trailer (and both vehicles landed in the ditch). Ultimately, the massive 18-wheeler landed on top of the SUV, which burst into flames – leaving both men inside dead at the scene.

Massive Shutdown

Another early morning Rockland County fatal big-rig accident involved a semi-truck and a sedan traveling north on the New York State Thruway. The early morning collision led to all the following:

  • The driver’s door of the sedan experienced considerable damage.
  • The sedan landed far from the semi in the accident’s aftermath.
  • The semi landed on its side in the thruway’s ditch.
  • The accident left one person dead.
  • All traffic on the thruway had to be halted as the vehicles and debris were cleared from the accident scene.

Two Semis Collide

In another southbound New York State Thruway accident, two tractor-trailers collided near Newburgh right before rush hour commenced. The accident led to multiple injuries, and because one of the trucks was carrying hazardous material, special investigative and clean-up crews were called in.

Common Causes of Tractor-Trailer Accidents

Truck drivers are professional drivers, which means they are required to have the skill necessary to drive their massive vehicles, they must exercise the necessary degree of caution to maneuver their rigs safely through traffic, and they must closely adhere to all applicable safety rules and restrictions. Truck accidents often boil down to a failure on the part of truck drivers to meet these safety standards. Common examples include:

  • Lack of familiarity with the road’s exits and entrances
  • Failure to signal lane changes appropriately
  • Truck driver fatigue
  • Truck driver distraction
  • Truck driver impairment
  • Excess speed
  • Failure to carefully plan the trucking route in advance
  • Inadequate truck maintenance
