An App Geared Toward Driving Distracted

August 20, 2020

We all know that driving while distracted is a dangerous proposition, but life is nothing if not distracting, and we’ve all succumbed to distracted driving a time or two. Fortunately, there’s now an app for that. A serial entrepreneur – who was injured in a bike accident by a smartphone-happy motorist – and his business partner are out to stop distracted driving in its tracks with an app-based incentive program that incorporates free milkshakes and more. Distracted drivers are dangerous drivers, and if such a motorist leaves you injured, you need an experienced New York City personal injury attorney on your side.

A New Approach

The New York Times reports that the two men researched the distraction-busting apps already out there only to discover that they’re generally based solely on blocking usage behind the wheel. Once you get up to a certain speed in your vehicle, the blocking mechanisms in these apps activate (some phones come with this feature built in). The new apps’ inventors decided to do away with this punishing approach in favor of supplying a delicious incentive for not hanging on one’s phone while behind the wheel.

Distracted Driving Poses a Serious Threat

The Times’ reporting shares the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s edict that texting is the most alarming distraction of all. When a motorist takes to his or her phone to text behind the wheel, all of the following apply:

● The driver’s thoughts are trained on the text rather than on the road ahead.

● The driver’s hands are involved in typing the outgoing text or accessing the incoming text rather than solely on maneuvering the vehicle safely.

● The driver’s vision is trained on the phone’s screen rather than on the traffic all around.

This App Saves Lives

The business partners have boldly named their invention “This App Saves Lives.” You can download the app for free, and it works in tandem with your smartphone to help discourage you from interacting with it when you’re driving. Once your smartphone’s internal GPS detects that you’re moving at a speed of 10 miles per hour or more, the app activates and starts monitoring any phone usage – for anything other than navigating, making hands-free calls, or listening to music. Any dangerously distracting usage – such as texting, reading, or watching videos – will be timed, and you’ll earn a point for every minute you refrain from engaging in these dangerous distractions. If you slip up, a point will be subtracted for every minute of distracted driving. Ultimately, your points can be exchanged for fun incentives, including Shake Shack’s world-famous shakes.
