Texting and Distracted Driving

Aggressive Personal Injury Attorneys Representing Individuals Injured in Distracted Driving Accidents

When you get behind the wheel, all of your attention should be focused on driving safely. To allow yourself to be distracted by anything other than this important pursuit puts everyone with whom you share the road in danger.Distracted driving is dangerous driving, and texting is one of the most dangerous distractions of all. If a distracted driver leaves you injured, you need an experienced texting/distracted driving accident attorney on your side.

Distracted Driving Awareness

The National Safety Council (NSC) shares that at least 100 people are injured and at least another 9 are killed in distracted driving accidents every day in America. The NSC reports that distractions like smartphones and other handheld technological devices threaten our safety. Their recommendation is to put your distractions away and #justdrive.

Distracted Driving: Sobering Statistics

The statistics are in, and texting and driving are a dangerous combination. The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) forwards several statistics related to distracted driving in all its many forms:

  • Nine percent of traffic accidents in 2016 involved a distracted driver.
  • Nearly 3,500 people died in traffic accidents that involved a distracted driver in 2016.
  • Traffic fatalities related to distracted driving are most closely associated with drivers who are between the ages of 15 and 19 years old.

While these statistics relate to all forms of distracted driving, the NHTSA identifies distracted texting as the most dangerous example of distracted driving. When you’re driving at highway speeds and you read or type a text, your eyes leave the road – and you essentially drive blind – for the full length of a football field. Make it your habit not to text and drive.

Texting and Driving: It’s Against the Law

The State of New York would like to remind you not to text and drive. In fact, it’s against the law:

  • Talking on your handheld smartphone
  • Composing, reading, sending, accessing, browsing, saving, retrieving, or otherwise interacting with electronic data on your smartphone
  • Viewing, taking, or sending pictures on your smartphone
  • Playing games on your smartphone

All of these are illegal in the State of New York. If you use a smartphone for anything other than calling in an emergency while you’re driving, you can be ticketed and fined – and can rack up points on your driving record. Driving under the distraction of your smartphone is not only not smart but is also extremely dangerous and illegal.
