How Common Are Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Every year in the United States, over 2 million people suffer traumatic brain injuries, the most serious of which can result in death. In New York, over 150 accidents involving traumatic brain injuries occur every day. Because of the lasting nature of these sorts of injuries, the medical care for rehabilitation and recuperation can range in the thousands or even millions of dollars, not to mention the time lost from work or daily life.

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are caused by a forceful blow to the head. The results from such an event can range from mild or moderate all the way to severe.

Common Brain Injuries

The most common brain injuries are:

  • Concussions
  • Skull fractures
  • Penetrating brain injuries

Concussions are the most common TBIs, making up three-quarters of all traumatic brain injuries. Concussions are sometimes characterized by the victim losing consciousness immediately after impact, but not all brain injuries will cause a person to lose consciousness. A concussed person might have aftereffect symptoms for weeks, months, or years after their initial injury.

A skull fracture is a crack in the skull or cranium. A skull fracture is extremely dangerous and can cause bleeding in the brain or invite a penetrating injury.

A penetrating brain injury is where a piece of foreign matter pierces the skull. High-impact collisions or explosions might cause a penetrating injury. Even if the object only entered a small part of the skull, this event can damage the entire brain.

Any sort of brain injury should be handled with care, as further complications may arise, including bleeding, swelling, or infection.

Who’s at Risk for a TBI?

While people who engage in high-impact events are at increased risk, a TBI can occur in common situations.

Causes of Brain Injuries

  • Falling or slipping can cause an individual to hit their head on a wall, the floor, or another surface hard enough to cause brain damage. The fall does not have to be from a height to make it forceful enough to cause a brain injury.
  • Bicycle accidents, especially where the rider is not wearing a helmet, may result in a crash that damages the brain or skull.
  • Sports injuries, especially in high-impact sports like hockey, football, and martial arts have a high risk of brain injury among participants.
  • Car crashes, or any motor vehicle crashes, have a high rate of brain injuries, either from penetrating injuries or fractures. Whiplash can also cause traumatic brain injuries or concussions.
  • Explosions often cause a high rate of TBI. Penetrating injuries and fractures are common in explosions, but the force of the blast itself can also cause concussion.
  • Assault, or rough physical contact from another person, may result in a TBI.
  • Medical malpractice, or situations where doctors or medical staff do not fully care for their patient, may result in injury to the brain or body, up to or including death.

Symptoms to Watch for After a Brain Injury

The symptoms of a brain injury can vary dramatically person to person, but the victim might experience the following:

  • Nausea, dizziness, or vomiting
  • Headaches or migraines that persist
  • Pupil dilation
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Difficulty moving or walking

In some situations, people who experienced brain injuries will fall into a coma. It is incredibly important that you do not try to “sleep off” a brain injury, and instead see a medical professional.

Long-Term Effects of a Brain Injury

While the acute symptoms of a brain injury might subside a few days to weeks after the initial injury, that doesn’t mean that the damage has been fully healed. Many people with brain injuries suffer long-term effects, including:

  • Sensitivity to lights, often brought on by strobing or flashing lights
  • Migraines or headaches, either brought on by sensitivity to lights or not
  • Sensitivity to smells
  • Fatigue
  • Memory loss

In severe cases, mobility or fine motor function may be permanently affected.

Steps to Take after Receiving a Brain Injury

If you have been involved in an accident and think your head or brain has been injured, seek medical treatment immediately. Even if you do not have a wound or bump on your head, there can be internal damage that needs to be addressed. A doctor will be able to tell you the immediate next steps for your health.
