NY Hit-and-Run Accidents Cost Lives over First Weekend in 2021

2021 off to a Deadly Start

On New Year’s Day, a married couple who was heading to work at John F. Kennedy Airport at about 5 AM was killed by a hit-and-run motorist. The wife was driving the couple northbound on Ocean Crest Boulevard in a Nissan Rogue, and they were only two blocks from their home when a hit-and-run motorist (a man driving a gray 2011 Dodge Ram truck) slammed into their vehicle at great speed. The truck’s driver fled the scene on foot, abandoning two passengers in the process. The couple was pronounced dead at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

One Child Injured, One Child Dead in a Hit and Run

A hit-and-run motorist driving a blue van struck two young children on the street outside of a Brooklyn yeshiva on the Monday morning after New Year’s Eve weekend. It’s been reported that the driver of the van parked the vehicle more than a mile away from the scene of the hit and run and later walked back to the spot where one child (age 4) was killed, and another (age 6) was critically wounded. The head of Transportation Alternatives voiced his concern in a statement relaying that traffic fatalities rose in 2020 and that the trend appears to be heating up on Mayor de Blasio’s watch. In fact, according to NYC’s Department of Health, traffic accidents are the primary cause of injury-related fatalities for New York children (aged 12 and younger).

Man in the Bronx Killed in Hit and Run

PIX11 News shares that a hit-and-run driver left a man dead in the Bronx on January 2. When first responders arrived at the scene (East 140 Street and Bruckner Boulevard) at around 11 PM, the victim was lying in the Bruckner Boulevard service road with head and body trauma. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and officials relay that his injuries are consistent with being struck by a car or other vehicle, which fled the scene.
