MUNICIPAL LIABILITY FOR ACCIDENTS INVOLVING A DANGEROUS CONDITION ON PUBLIC PROPERTY
Cities have a responsibility to maintain reasonably safe roads and streets in order to help keep pedestrians safe. No city can prevent every type of accident, but reasonable steps must be taken in order to prevent foreseeable sources of harm. When the city becomes notified of a dangerous condition on a public property, they must take corrective action in order to fix the problem. Street signs are made of metal and are subjected to wind, snow and rain. Over time they can corrode and lose their structural integrity. This may cause them to fall and potentially hit someone. Any person that is hit by a falling street sign may be entitled to file a claim for damages including medical bills and lost wages.
