LIABILITY IN BUS ACCIDENTS WITH VEHICLES MAKING LEFT TURNS
Bus drivers have a responsibility to drive in a reasonably safe manner according to the prevailing conditions of the road. When a bus driver is negligent and causes an accident, the city or company that they work for may be vicariously liable. With respect to left turn accidents, a driver making a left turn must yield to all pedestrians or vehicles that are close enough to pose a hazard. A driver making a left turn will usually be held liable if they are involved in an accident unless they had a green arrow. In addition to driver negligence, there may also be municipal negligence on the part of the city if an intersection was in a dangerous condition at the time of an accident. For example, poorly lit intersections might make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and contribute to accidents. Any person that is injured or killed in an accident with a bus driver making a left turn may be able to file a claim for damages.
