MANHATTAN: One Man Injured In Manhole Explosion Accident While Sitting In Parked Car

Accident Involving Exploding Manhole Leaves 38-Year-Old Man Injured In Manhattan After Underground Transformer Caught Fire

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (March 24, 2018) – One man was injured after a manhole exploded while he was sitting parked in his car waiting to visit his wife.

Manhattan police are saying that the man was parked over the manhole when a transformer vault below the street caught fire.

Witnesses to the accident said that it sounded like a bomb went off. The impact of the explosion blew off a part of the Hyundai’s bumper.

Shortly after the first explosion another manhole exploded on Liberty Street.

Authorities are saying that the injured man was transported to the hospital following the accident and later released.

Con Ed has indicated that snowstorms and the salt that is used to treat the streets may have leaked underground and caused equipment to corrode.

An investigation in the accident remains ongoing a this time.

Cities have a responsibility to create a reasonably safe environment for people and take measures to prevent foreseeable sources of harm. When a city fails to provide reasonable measures in order to maintain a safe environment, that city may be held liable if its negligence leads to an accident. In particular, there are a number of safety precautions that should be put in place in order to prevent manhole explosions. Manhole explosions usually take place when sparks from faulty wiring come into contact with combustible gases. If a city fails to properly seal off gas lines or electrical wires and this leads to an explosion, the city may be liable. Any person that is injured may be able to file a claim for damages.
