Henrietta police have been able to identify the student that was injured as 25-year-old Steven Carranco.
Steven Carranco was walking along the shoulder of East River Road which does not have any sidewalks. A box truck driver traveling south down the road struck the Rochester Institute of Technology student as he was also walking south.
Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene of the collision in order to treat Steven Carranco for his injuries following the truck accident.
He was taken to the Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries from being hit by the semi truck.
The truck driver was not arrested after the truck crash, though he was issued a ticket for an expired inspection.
An investigation into the truck accident remains ongoing, but a number of residents are calling the stretch of road where the accident took place dangerous due to its poor lighting, narrow shoulders and lack of sidewalks.
A You Caring page has been set up to help the victim.
LIABILITY IN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS WITH TRACTOR TRAILOR TRUCKS
Truck drivers have a responsibility to drive according to the prevailing conditions of the road and to keep a watchful eye out for pedestrians. If a truck driver is negligent and hits a pedestrian while they are working within the scope of their employment, the company that the driver works for may be held liable. Unfortunately, many truck drivers are forced to work long hours or simply don’t get enough sleep to be able to drive at full capacity. Any person that is injured due to the negligence of a truck driver may be able to file a claim for damages including medical care, lost wages and pain and suffering.
Our staff at Lipsig Lawyers were deeply saddened to learn about the tragic accident that injured Steven Carranco. We extend our thoughts and prayers to the victim and his family as he continues to recover. We encourage anyone that may have seen what happened to come forward and speak with investigators. We sincerely hope that the truck company that injured this young man will step forward and take responsibility for their actions. Moreover, we hope that city officials will take notice of what happened and install street lights on this stretch of road. This is a very dark and dangerous road with no sidewalks that many students travel down, and this could have been anyone’s child. We encourage everyone to donate to the YouCaring page that has been set up to help with his medical expenses.
